A new wave of AI agents appears to be building across Ethereum, BNB Chain and Solana, with reported totals near 21,000 during the ERC-8004 rollout period.
The headline number matters less than the underlying shift: identity, reputation and validation layers are moving closer to the centre of agent infrastructure.
What is being reported
Reported figures place activity at 20,928 agents and roughly 15,000 users shortly after ERC-8004-style infrastructure began circulating in production environments.
Those figures indicate real activity. At the same time, independent third-party verification of exact counts can vary by indexer and chain coverage, so the total should be treated as a moving figure, not a fixed benchmark.
What ERC-8004 actually is
ERC-8004 is a proposed Ethereum standard focused on trustless agent discovery and trust signals.
At a high level, it introduces three registry concepts:
- Identity: an on-chain identity record for the agent (built on ERC-721 structure)
- Reputation: standardized feedback signals about agent performance
- Validation: optional ways to prove or check agent outputs
This architecture is designed to make agent behavior more legible, comparable and auditable across applications.
Ethereum, BNB Chain and Solana: one important nuance
ERC-8004 is an Ethereum-origin standard and naturally fits EVM ecosystems first. Ethereum and BNB Chain alignment is straightforward in that context.
Solana mentions in reporting likely reflect broader cross-chain agent infrastructure and interface layers, rather than a direct one-to-one implementation of Ethereum standards on Solana itself.
Risks that still matter
Even with better standards, major risks remain:
- spam agent creation
- weak reputation signals
- wallet and key exposure through unsafe tooling
- unclear economics for real, sustained agent usage
In short, there is growth, but not yet a final model everyone agrees on.
What to watch next
The strongest signals will be operational:
- active agents completing repeat tasks, not just registering once
- transparent reputation data people can audit
- third-party applications integrating these agents in production
- clearer proof that agents produce real user value
If those appear, this could become a real step toward an open agent economy. If not, it risks becoming another fast cycle with weak durability.
